NPA Searches for New Executive Director

The Natural Products Association (NPA) has announced the departure of John Gay after two years as executive director and CEO. “We wish John well and know he will succeed in his next endeavors,” said NPA President Jeff Wright. “NPA is well positioned to continue our legacy of leadership on issues important to the industry. The association is in a sound position with membership on the rise. We have healthy reserves and revenue has grown the past several years. Most importantly, our members really make us effective at what we do.
“As the nation’s oldest and largest association dedicated to the natural products industry, I’m pleased that NPA continues to enjoy the utmost respect and effectiveness in Washington, D.C. We also have a dedicated and talented staff,” Wright continued. “NPA has been a leader on critical issues for our industry and will continue to be a leader as we move forward. We have already begun the process of selecting the next executive director for NPA. While NPA searches for a new executive director, a team that includes Wright, Daron Watts, partner at Sidley Austin LLP, and other industry veterans will lead operations and oversee NPA’s advocacy outreach and industry self-regulatory programs.

Nordic Naturals Announces the What’s Essential Display Contest

Nordic Naturals® (Watsonville, CA) is launching a special end cap display contest for natural products retailers that began on January 1, 2012. The goal of the display contest is to raise awareness for a corresponding consumer-driven contest with the theme “What’s Essential™.”

The What’s Essential campaign and accompanying contests are designed to encourage individuals to think about what’s essential—what matters most in their lives. For the consumer aspect of the contest, participants can share their essential story via Nordic Naturals’ Facebook page or website for their chance to win prizes, including a trip to California and more. Both the retail display contest and the consumer contest are running through April 30, 2012. Winners will be announced in May.
Retailers are invited to participate in the display contest for their chance to win a trip to California as well as to help promote the consumer contest. Questions can be directed to a store’s Nordic Naturals sales rep or by calling the company’s Retail Sales Division.

Lundberg Family Farms Awards Grants

Lundberg Family Farms® (Richvale, CA) has announced the first recipients of its Raising Organic Family Farms initiative, which provides education and financial support to organic family farmers.

Lundberg awarded a total $25,000 in grants, with $19,500 in grants to 19 organic farmers in various disciplines including bee farms, livestock farms, mushroom farms and food pantries. Another $5,500 in education grants was awarded to six applicants who requested funds for education expenses or conference fees.

The Raising Organic Family Farms multi-year program is designed to inspire a new generation of organic family farmers and support aspiring agricultural entrepreneurs. Due to the success of the first program, Lundberg has decided that the grants will be award twice yearly in amounts totaling $25,000, to be used for investment in equipment and supplies, and education in organic and sustainable agriculture. The Raising Organic Family Farms program will take applications for the next round of grants from January 16, 2012 through March 16, 2012.

“These recipients merited our support for their commitment to responsible land stewardship and sustainable agriculture,” said Grant Lundberg, CEO of Lundberg Family Farms. “Raising Organic Family Farms is our way of building on the Lundberg Family legacy of responsibility and sustainability in our business, a legacy that our generation inherited from our parents, which we are passing down to our children.”

The recipients of the Raising Organic Family Farms grants were determined by a panel of judges comprised of representatives of Lundberg Family Farms. The panel chose grantees in two categories from a wide pool of applicants that included commercial farmers of all ages and experience levels, beginning or transitioning organic farmers, college students, organizations and influencers active in growing the organic farming movement.

NOW Foods Names Emme President

NOW Health Group (Bloomingdale, IL) has announced that Jim Emme has been promoted to president of NOW Foods. Emme joined NOW Foods in January 1995 as plant manager and was promoted to COO in December 2007. With 30 years experience in consumer packaged goods companies, Emme has managed global operations in manufacturing, sales, marketing and quality assurance.

Al Powers will continue to serve as CEO of NOW Health Group, with all U.S. and Canada business units reporting to him.

Naturex Acquires Pektowin

Naturex (Avignon, France) recently announced that it has reached an agreement with the Polish Industrial Development Agency (Agencja Rozwoju Przemysłu S.A - ARP) to acquire 100 percent of the capital of Zpow Pektowin Sa (Pektowin), a Polish company based in Jaslo specialized in the production of apple and citrus pectins, fruit and vegetable juice concentrates and, for a smaller proportion, the preparation of processed food products.

The full completion of this acquisition is subject to the final agreement of the Polish Ministry of the Treasury, which should confirm the privatization of Pektowin by the end of this month.

This second acquisition of 2011 (the company purchased of Burgundy Botanical Extracts in October) fits with the Group’s strategy to accelerate its international development, expand its product range and strengthen its industrial presence, particularly in emerging countries.

“This new acquisition is perfectly in line with our growth strategy in complementary markets with a broadened product portfolio, a strengthened production capacity as well as an additional industrial know-how,” said Jacques Dikansky, president and CEO of Naturex. “We are confident in our ability to integrate Pektowin within Naturex Group, enhancing its industrial tools and products.”
