New Approaches to Inflammatory Conditions of the Digestive Tract

When it comes to digestive health, one emerging field of great interest that Isaac Eliaz, MD, MS, Lac, medical director of Amitabha Clinic in Santa Rosa, CA, said he has been extensively researching is the role of galectin-3, a molecule for injury repair. “A rapidly growing body of published data shows that at elevated levels, galectin-3 is a causative factor for inflammation of multiple organs including the digestive tract; as well as fibrosis, organ failure, cancer and metastasis,” Eliaz said. “In 2011, the FDA approved the first serum galectin-3 test as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in cardiovascular disease and heart failure. This test is also being used clinically to assess risk and prognosis of other pro-inflammatory diseases as well as cancer.”

A targeted therapeutic approach to elevated galectin-3 is use of a proven galectin-3 blocker called modified citrus pectin (MCP). “This preparation, derived from the pith of citrus peels and enzymatically modified for absorption and bioactivity, is the only proven natural galectin-3 inhibitor as demonstrated in multiple studies,” Eliaz noted. “MCP binds to galectin-3 and blocks its detrimental effects, thus helping to improve inflammatory conditions of the bowel and other organs. MCP is also being studied as a preventative for colon cancer and other cancers of the digestive tract.”
